After rumors swirled last night and the death of Joe Paterno was fabricated, this morning it was announced that Paterno died peacefully this morning in his hospital room in the presence of his family.
A statement from the Paterno family was released, and it reads as follows (Associated Press):
“It is with great sadness that we announce that Joe Paterno passed away earlier today. His loss leaves a void in our lives that will never be filled. He died as he lived. He fought hard until the end, stayed positive, thought only of others and constantly reminded everyone of how blessed his life had been.”
Paterno was the head football coach at Penn State for the last 46 years, until his untimely firing in the middle of this season forced him out of the program. Paterno faced a battle with lung cancer shortly after his removal from the program, and was sent to the hospital on January 13th for complications from his chemotherapy treatments.
Joe Paterno died January 22nd, 2012 at the age of 85. He leaves five children, his wife, Sue, and a legacy that will continue to live on, both at Penn State and in the game of college football.
